What’s so different about The Stable Mat?

The mats are of very high quality, are hardwearing, extremely durable and as they are non-porous, do not smell. We offer a nation-wide fitting service, so the mats are professionally fitted in your stable, ensuring you won’t be disappointed with the end result.

What are the benefits for my horse?

The stable mat has a textured, non-slip surface which reduces the risk of slipping. The grooved underside also ‘gives‘ to provide relief to joints and muscles, great for older horses. It provides a pleasant and warmer surface to lie on with insulating properties, making it a lot kinder than concrete and also eliminates the risk of capped hocks and elbows. In addition, the amount of bedding required is minimal, reducing the risk of respiratory problems.

What are the benefits for me?

The assurance that your horse has a comfortable and safe flooring system. Most people find that they can dramatically reduce the amount of bedding used, making mucking out a much quicker job and also saving you money.

Do you give a guarantee?

Yes, The Stable Mat comes with a 5 year guarantee, if fitted by a registered fitter.

What does your guarantee actually mean?

That if you are not completely satisfied with the quality and performance of The Stable Mat, then we will replace the mats free of charge.

Why is your guarantee only valid for 5 years, a lot of other companies offer 10 years?

It is a genuine guarantee; any problems are likely to be evident long before the guarantee is up. In reality, the mats will last much longer. Due to the consistent high quality of The Stable Mat, we don’t get complaints!

Are adhesives used in the fitting process?

No, the mats are butted up tightly and ‘self seal’, which means that urine will not leak through. Also, the mats can be lifted up, so you can take them with you if you move stables or wish to remove the mats to annually disinfect the stable. If you do remove the mats from the stable, take care to ensure that they are correctly replaced in the same fitting positions to ensure the same tight, sealed fit. If you are moving stables, you may need to get the mats professionally fitted again or seek professional advice.

My friend has had mats fitted and they seem really smelly. Why is this and will your mats smell?

The smell you have noticed is most likely caused by urine seeping under the mats and becoming exposed to the air, causing a very pungent ammonia smell. This could be because the mats are porous, therefore the urine is supposed to drain through the mats and then away, or because the mats are non-porous, but not well fitted so urine has seeped under the mats. The Stable Mat does not smell once fitted as it is a non-porous mat so any urine will sit on top of the mat and will be absorbed by your bedding. As The Stable Mat is fitted tightly, this ensures that urine can not seep under the mats to cause an unpleasant smell.

My stable isn’t sloped and doesn’t have any drainage, is it ok?

Don’t worry, you don’t need it because the mats will not allow urine to seep through and your bedding will absorb surface urine as usual.

Do I still need to put a bed down?

Yes, you will still need bedding to absorb the urine. Think of the mats as a replacement floor. As a general rule we recommend keeping the bankings and reducing the depth of the bed. It’s a case of finding out what works best for you and your horse, most people start with the usual amount of bedding and cut it down over a few weeks to an amount that works for them.

What sort of bedding should I use with the mats?

The mats work most efficiently with absorbent bedding such as shavings, paper, hemp etc. However, there is no reason why you could not also use bedding such as straw.

Do I need to use a special fork to muck out?

No, you can use your normal tools; the best way to think of the mats is as a replacement floor. The mats are tough and they can withstand heavy wear, including shoeing and horses wearing studs on them!

How much money am I likely to save in bedding?

Based on a 12’x12’ stable and a shavings bed you will have paid for your investment within 9 months! Less bedding means less dust, which helps reduce the likelihood of respiratory problems. You will also save on time previously spent mucking out and have a cleaner, drier bed, which helps guard against bacterial infections.

Is it suitable for using on stable walls too and in my lorry?

It’s great for the horse walker, wash box and lorry (except the ramp), however, the mats are just too heavy to fit to the stable wall.

How much does it cost?

A standard stable (12’ x 12’) costs £270 plus a fitting cost of approx £40. There may also be a charge for delivery, ask your fitter.

What about if the stable floor is not level?

The floor doesn’t need to be level, but any small holes may need to be filled. You can discuss the floor and any potential problems with your fitter in advance.

Can I use individual mats for placing in a doorway, passage or field shelter?

You can use the mats placed individually, although as they are not professionally fitted, the guarantee will not cover mats used in this way. Mats used on their own are more prone to the edges curling up, becoming damaged or moving. However, we are aware of many situations where mats have been used on their own with great success.

I want to fit the mats myself, do you have any guidelines to help me?

Please remember that the mats are very heavy, 45kg each and that unfortunately we cannot offer our guarantee on mats that have not been fitted by one of our registered fitters. However, if you choose to fit the mats yourself, we can send you some guidelines. The mats are easily cut using a Stanley knife or jigsaw blade.
